About

Him Amrit is working on changing lives for the good, especially in Rural India, where the heart of the country lies and flourishes the most.

Mission

Healthy Farms, Farmers and Consumers - Our aim is to encourage mountain households to move away from chemical farming and engage in community based tourism activities. Thus they would be able to enhance their livelihoods in a sustainable manner, while making available heathy and sustainable food supplies and tourism services for consumers.

Vision

To make mountain farmers climate resilient and self-reliant through promotion of organic farming and community based tourism. The above will give access to chemical free and nutrient rich farm produce as well as flavor of pristine nature and mountain culture to inhabitants in and beyond the Himalayas.

Values

Responsible Consumption and Production based on Prosperity, Sustainability, Heathier Lives and Well-Being, Increased Equality, Climate Smart and Empowered Communities

Our Genesis

Post-Independence, India has transformed from a food-scarce to food-exporting country primarily due to green revolution. The agricultural production saw a multi-fold increase from 135 million tons in 1950 to over 1300 million tons in 2021. The small and marginal farmers of rainfed areas of the country were largely left out of the process of agricultural transformation, leading to decreasing farm productivities and outmigration of farmers over the years.  Green revolution also had drastic effects on the ecology, environment, soil and human health arising out of over use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and insecticides, and has also led to depleting ground water resources.

The recent pandemic (resulting into high mortality rates and return of the out migrants to their villages) has forced us to go back to the drawing board and review the rural economy and agricultural production system. It also required the society to re-think on its food consumption pattern. The fallout of green revolution and pandemic has thus made us aware of the health issues. Farmers need to mobilized and motivated to move away from chemical and fossil-fuel based conventional ways to a more sustainable agriculture practice. This change is needed especially among the small and marginal farmers, pastoral communities, forest dwellers and landless people who are always at the subsistence level.

One of the regions which especially needs attention is the Western Himalayan region, which is rich in natural resources, and stands as an important geographic factor that regulates hydrology and agro-climatic conditions of the whole country. Yet characterized by low productivity, low income, low employment with high incidence of poverty. Subsistence agriculture is unable to meet the food and livelihood security to the mountain farmers.  There are variety of reasons for the low productivity of the farming system, including rainfed farming and low inputs, low investment and high logistic cost apart from poor market access.

We need knowledge-intensive agriculture and the metrics need to be redefined where production is not the only criterion for good performance. It has to include the entire landscape and the positive and negative externalities that are generated by alternative forms of agriculture practices. Integrated Farming System (IFS) can be promoted for strengthening of natural resources, conservation of soil and water, crop diversification, improving livelihoods and promoting income security. It can also be helpful in mitigation of impacts of disasters like floods, landslides and climate change
